- Reprinted 1970. page 227: "...In the theology of Marcion, which filled a large place in the Christianity of both the second and the third centuries, ditheism was presented as the only solution of this and all other contrasts of which the world is full, and of which that of Law and Grace is the most typical example. The New Testament was the revelation of the good God, the God of love; the Old Testament was that of the just God, the God of wrath." Although Marcion's theology was "consistently opposed by the great mass of Christian communities" (p 231) it needs to be noted that it has led to the notion that the OT has been fulfilled in Christ. This is the root cause of "Replacement Theology." Hatch states: "...a large part of what are sometimes called Christian doctrines, and many usages which have prevailed and continue to prevail in the Christian Church, are in reality Greek theories and Greek usages changed in form and color by the influence of primitive Christianity, but in their essence Greek still." (p 350)
